Sharon Sawyer’s Art Quilts Exhibit
“Here and Hereafter”, an exhibition of mixed media art quilts by Sharon Sawyer, will be officially opened at an Artist’s Reception at the Cornwall Town Hall, on Tuesday, September 7 at 7 p.m. The public are cordially invited.
Sharon Sawyer resides in Clyde River, where she has lived for the past year since moving to PEI from Lowell, Massachusetts, U.S.A. Her work was selected for inclusion in the 2010 Newcomers’ Art Exhibition at the Guild in Charlottetown. Over the winter, Sharon taught a workshop offered by a three way partnership of the PEI Government’s Department of Tourism and Culture, the PEI Seniors’ Federation and the Clyde River Women’s Institute. In the past, Sharon’s work has been in exhibitions throughout the United States, including the Lowell Quilt Festival, the Whistler House Museum of Art, the DeCordova Museum, and the Revolving Museum and Quilt National in Houston, Texas. Her work has also appeared in Quilting Arts Magazine.
Sharon uses a unique process in creating her art quilts. She sculpts the central figures by hand in polymer clay and incorporates them into her quilts, creating a highly embellished, three-dimensional mixed-media collage. Here and Hereafter is a series of small art quilts depicting the legends of saints and Catholic nuns at work and play.
Sharon’s exhibit can be seen at the Cornwall Town Hall gallery until October 16.
