Monday, November 5th is municipal Election Day in 69 communities on PEI. Clyde River will hold a special election meeting at 7 PM at the Riverview Community Centre to elect a Chairperson and 6 councillors. All residents of Clyde River are invited to attend. The Council will serve for an abbreviated 2-year term until the fall of 2014 when municipal elections take place in all communities across the Island.
Like many small communities, Clyde River elects municipal representatives during a Special Election meeting. Candidates must be present at the meeting or submit a signed document stating they are willing to be nominated and stand for election. Candidates are nominated from the floor by eligible voters and voting takes place shortly afterwards. The election results are announced following the vote count. The entire process takes about 2 hours.
To be eligible to run for municipal office, you must be:
• 18 years of age or older,
• a Canadian citizen, and
• a resident of your municipality for no less than one year preceding the nomination date.
To vote in the election in your municipality, you must be:
• 18 years of age or older,
• a Canadian citizen, and
• a resident of the municipality for the past six months.
